Breast Cancer Testimonies

Caught off guard…

My name is Mike Carey and I have been working for Cutting Edge Products since 1993. I work in sales and operations for the company. I have been married to my beautiful wife, Miriam, since 1999 and we have twin boys, Aaron and Michael, who were born in November of 2001.  Since I work in the security products industry I hear a lot about crime. And like any husband and father, I worry about the security of my family. Our city, Greenville, is a small city, but it has its share of crime, so naturally I am concerned about their safety. But imagine how “caught off guard” I was to learn that my wife’s life was threatened not by an external source, such as a robber or carjacker, but from something inside her very own body- cancerous cells! I dealt with a lot of emotions- fear of losing her, anger over what she went through, but through it all she was tough as nails, and she inspired me. Her faith in God seemed to strengthen through this- and helped me to strengthen mine.  Here is her story...

"It was February of 2010 and I was sitting comfortably on my bed with a textbook on my lap preparing for an exam on breast ultrasound and the many diseases that can be detected by ultrasound.   I remember simply passing my hand over my left breast and feeling a lump I had never felt before.  I passed my hand over again to be sure it was really a lump that I had felt. Immediately, I felt another lump- one in my throat!  I had a feeling of blood rushing and draining from head, my heart racing a million miles an hour and a big knot forming in my stomach.  This was the worst feeling I had ever had. How could this be happening to me?  I just had a mammogram in December 2009 that was reported to be negative! I began to think of my two young twin boys and my husband and how I would not be around to see my boys grow up nor grow old with the man I love. I was scared, yet I tried to stay calm and positive. I even tried to utilize my newly acquired ultrasound scanning skills (which is what I was studying at the time) to scan myself and make my own diagnosis.  Soon after, I set an appointment to see my gynecologist, who confirmed that she too could feel the lump. The rollercoaster ride began. First, another mammogram was ordered to image the suspicious lump, then an ultrasound to confirm the abnormality seen on x-ray. A biopsy was soon ordered and I was called back for the report. I had that same bad feeling all over again. The next few words I heard, “your biopsy confirms that you have invasive ductal carcinoma” stung so hard that I sat staring blankly at the doctor.  I kept thinking this is only a bad dream, this isn’t really happening! This was the natural human side of me.  God began to work in my heart and mind and as I look back at the beginning I know that God was with me and it was Him who led me to feel the lump, scan it myself and seek immediate medical intervention. Through prayers, love and support from relatives and friends, God was with me through the whole process; the peace I felt in my heart was greater than the fear I had in the beginning. I had a lumpectomy and the tumor (1.9cm) was removed along with 20 lymph nodes.  I underwent chemotherapy and radiation treatments, and have been cancer free since September of 2010.  I thank God for giving me life, for the wonderful support of my husband, twin boys, family and friends, for the wonderful group of doctors and staff that were part of my medical treatment and for giving mankind the wisdom to put together new and advanced medicines and technology that are helping to save lives and add to the list of breast cancer survivors every day!"

 Protecting what matters most…

One other thing I felt during the time my wife went through her cancer treatment- thankfulness. Thankfulness to God for bringing her through it, and thankful to work with the great group of people that make up Cutting Edge Products. From prayers, to time off to be with my wife during her treatments, to meals, to help taking care of our kids, and in so many other ways, the support was truly amazing. And both my wife and I were very thankful, and proud, when our company decided to contribute a portion of the proceeds from the sale of certain products to breast cancer research.

A letter from Carol-Lee Morris, an employee of Cutting Edge since 2010.

As a proud member of the Cutting Edge Products family, I would to share the testimony of my very dear friend Michelle Everette. On August 13, 2014, Michelle was diagnosed with breast cancer. Each morning at Cutting Edge Products, is started off with prayer. Michelle was added to our prayer list. We prayed for Michelle throughout her battle with cancer. Michelle is such as amazing Christian woman. Not once during all of the many tests, sixteen chemo treatments, twenty-eight rounds of radiation of surgery, did she ever complain. Instead of complaining or feeling sorry for herself, Michelle devoted her time to helping others.

Each year, during the month of September, our Pink Ribbon Series products are on special, and a percentage of the proceeds are donated toward Breast Cancer Treatment and Awareness. This never crossed my mind as we prayed for Michelle each morning before work. My heart was full of emotion and tears filled my eyes when I was informed Michelle would be a recipient of the donation. I had simply asked for prayer for Michelle. I cannot express the feeling it gave me to be a part of a company that had never met Michelle, yet prayed for her daily and were moved to donate towards her treatment. The pride I felt when my young daughters witnessed as Michelle received this gift of love and support from the company was overwhelming. Along with her mother, Beth, and her grandmother, Charlotte, Michelle was able to come to our office and meet everyone and thank them for the prayers and support they had shown her. In April 2015, Michelle was diagnosed CANCER FREE!! I consider it an honor to be a part of Michelle’s life and a member of Cutting Edge Products because they are each a true example of faith and Christian values.

A letter from Pam Toler, wife of James "JT" Toler, an employee of Cutting Edge since 2007.

I truly believe you don’t know how much you are able to handle or go through until it happens to you. On September 23, 2011 I was told I had breast cancer.  With my husband and mom both with me I was reassured that I could get through this. Praise God at the time I found my lump (August 28, 2011) I didn’t put off going to have it checked. I was in the yard picking up limbs after the hurricane when I discovered the lump, told my husband about it and he told me to go have it checked. My maternal grandmother had breast cancer in both her breasts as well as her sister so our family had been through this before.  It’s amazing how God allows things to happen as I was the same age and same side as my grandmother. She lived to be 83 and did not die from cancer. The day I found out my stepdaughter gave me the most important advice, and that was to “stay positive!” When I look back I am somewhat amazed that I came through it so well.  My faith family and friends were all there for me and so supportive. By not putting off going to the doctor, the cancer was caught at a stage one. I praise God that it had not spread. Through chemo I did lose my hair but it’s growing back. I held on to my faith that I would get through this. People still tell me I am an inspiration, but not really in my eyes. I was doing what I needed to do and holding on to faith that I would get through it. I have met some wonderful people on the way and we have shared many encouraging stories. Encouragement and love as well as faith are so important. One of my favorite songs is Casting Crowns "I will praise you in this storm" and that is exactly what I did... I am blessed and thankful.
